A Night with the Pros:
China, the New Wine Frontier
w/ Janis Miglavs

Or, how he turned a personal project into a profitable book, and saw China in a way only a handful have ever done.

Join Janis Miglavs for a photographer’s and adventurist’s visual journey through parts of China and an incredible wine scene not seen by tourists, photographers or many outsiders or locals. Get a behind-the-scenes peek at a booming industry.

Along the way learn some secrets, like how to survive drinking wine with local Chinese during the common practice of ganbei.

China is now the world's largest market for red wine, having increased by 136% since 2008, whereas it has declined by 18% in France, the second-largest consumer of reds. Small wonder that Chinese wineries are springing up like Oregon mushrooms to meet the tremendous demand in their own backyard.

Yet most people inside or outside of the Land of the Dragon have no idea about the country’s wine booming wine industry, let alone that China’s wine history actually dates back at least 9000 years.

Hear how Marco Polo rated the Chinese wine during his Silk Road journeys. He even suggested a wine mixture for mad dog bites. (Hey, consider that treatment the next time you get bit during an assignment.)

What started as a curious adventure to China, turned out to be a very profitable book project.

About Storyteller/Author/Photographer Janis Miglavs

Since his high school teaching days, Janis (pronounced Yanis in English) Miglavs has worked as a professional writer and photographer with both Fortune 500 companies and editorial clients such as National Geographic, Nikon, and a long list of travel magazines.

For the past 15 years he has specialized in wine, writing and photographing for all of the major wine publications, including Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and working with winery clients around the world.

While he has contributed to many major wine books and publications, including the definitive wine book Opus Vino, he has three solo award winning books. The first, PNW Ultimate Winery Guide won praise for photography. The second, Oregon The Taste of Wine, won incredible recognition including a Gold Medal for the “Best Regional Book” in North America, a finalist for “Best Book on New World Wines” and Wine Spectator magazine called it “one of top reads for wine lovers.”

Now, after five years of travel, research and photography throughout China, he completed his most recent book, China The New Wine Frontier, written specifically for the Chinese market. At a special ceremony in Beijing, he received the “Best in the World” award for the book.

Janis is also a past president of ASMP Oregon.

A limited number of this collector’s one-of-a-kind China The New Wine Frontier book will be available at the presentation.
